She Review: Why Watch it and What Next?

Will there be a She Netflix season 2? A question in the minds of every Netflix user who watched the Indian web series. This review, here, will answer this question and more. So shall we start? Overview

The Netflix original series She follows the life of a female police constable Bhoomi as she goes undercover to bust a drug ring. With seven episodes, the series shows the struggles of a woman against gender roles and cliches. She Netflix IMDb rate is a mere 6.6, but the show directed by Imtiaz Ali has the potential to stand out with fewer mishaps in the script. Review
Starring Aditi Pohankar, She web series can be described in one word-- metamorphosis. The series essentially focuses on a woman who undergoes a subtle but strong transformation after discovering her sexuality. The way Imtiaz Ali has broached the subject of a woman's sexuality and shown the struggles Bhoomi faces is what makes the show fascinating and addictive.

  • A layered story

Another thing that I love about the Netflix original series is the many layers in the story. At first glance, the plot may seem about a woman in a man's world, as Bhoomi faces ridicule for being "masculine." It may also seem about the transformation that she undergoes on her path of discovering her sexuality. However, the show talks about so much more like the "duty" of and expectations from a wife, the distorted image of feminine charm, and the psychological and physiological trauma of abuse to list a few.
  • Aditi Pohankar and Bhoomi

Watching Bhoomi discover her strength and capabilities across the seven episodes has been a wonderful experience to me, personally. Aditi Pohankar has done a brilliant job in expressing the dilemma, the emotional and psychological struggles that the character, Bhoomi, feels. From fearing her sexuality to jealousy towards her sister, Bhoomi feels it all, and Pohankar portrayed it beautifully. However, I hoped she (the character) would punch her husband witless (hopefully in the next season).
  • Vijay Varma and Sasya
When reviewing the web series She, one cannot forget Vijay Varma AKA Sasya. He is nasty, prude, and a dirtbag, but he was one damn interesting character. Vijay Varma's versatile acting throughout the seven episodes of the series was a delight to watch to a point where I craved for him to be on screen in every episode. Sasya's chemistry with Aditi Pohankar's Bhoomi (no, not just the romantic one) made the show even better. To be honest, I almost rooted for the two until Nayak came about.

  • The suave ring leader
Netflix
Speaking of Nayak, isn't he the most gentlemanly and smart villain? Appearing in just two episodes, Kishore Kumar has established the suave Nayak in my heart, making me anxious to see more of him in the next season. His scenes with Aditi Pohankar were a treat to watch.

  • The slow pace
Netflix
Despite an interesting concept, the Netflix original series has its pitfalls, especially in its pacing. While it started with a bang, it soon seemed to fizzle out in the subsequent episodes with a sense of monotony setting in. The redeeming factor could be how those episodes seemed realistic to that of an undercover operation-- the wait and the delay. Moreover, the slow paces seemed to create a hype for Bhoomi's transformation.

  • An incompetent handler
Netflix
Another pitfall of the show is the seemingly incompetent narcotics team, who failed to track their asset. In the current world of technology, it seems rather odd that the only way Jason Fernandes had Bhoomi's back was through a mobile phone. On the flip side, it may also seem the most realistic representation of an undercover op outside of films.
In a nutshell, the Netflix original series She is worth a watch just for watching the stunning performances of Vijay Varma and Aditi Pohankar.

What Next?
There is something quite addictive about the show despite its mishaps. You have likely finished She in a day. If you have and are wondering what to do next, I have you covered.
  • Watch similar series: Netflix has a good collection of women-centric series like Ghoul, Delhi Crime, Lust Stories, etc. You can watch any of those if you haven't. Alternatively, you can also watch series like Man's World, Code M, Hostages, It's Not That Simple, and the like with strong, serious plots.
  • Binge on Imtiaz Ali's works: If the Netflix original series has created a yearning for Imtiaz Ali's works, go ahead watch Jab We Met, Cocktail, Highway, Rockstar, etc.
  • Undercover cop movies: Go ahead and relive the exciting undercover cop movies like the Jump Street series, Cartel War, The Departed, and the likes.
  • Cop books: If the world of cops fascinates you, then read books by authors James Patterson, David Baldacci, Mary Higgins Clark, Patricia Cornwell, Ankush Saika, and the likes.

Will there be a second season?
Will there be a She Netflix season 2? The answer to the question is time-dependant. Judging by the way the first season ended, logically, there should be another season. However, it all depends on the viewer ratings the Netflix original series gets. We can expect the second season, if any, to come out around March 2021, but there is yet to be confirmed. If you ask my personal opinion, there should be 2nd season for I cannot wait to see Aditi Pohanker on-screen, continuing Bhoomi's journey of empowerment. Have you watched Her, yet?
